Charity Advocacy CRA Rules

Important: Consider CRA Rules for Charities Engaging in Advocacy.

If you are a charitable organization, review the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA), Policies and guidance about operating a registered charity, Political Activities, CPS-022

The Calgary Chamber of Voluntary Organizations published a useful overview: Influencing Public Policy: Rules for Charities Engaging in Advocacy. It sumerizes the ways in which a charity can advocate, explaining how current policy divides a charity’s activities into three categories:

  • Charitable activities- allowed/unlimited
  • Political activities- allowed up to 10-20%
  • Prohibited activities- never allowed
